Jeffers and Ricks earn national honors

OVERLAND PARK, KS < Johnson County Community College head coach Mike Jeffers and sophomore guard Nafis Ricks are reaping the rewards for leading JCCC to 2009 NJCAA Division II Championship. Jeffers has been selected as the National Coach of the Year by the NJCAA, Kansas Basketball Coaches Association and the National Association of Basketball Coaches. Ricks has been named first-team All-American for a second straight year, becoming just the second player in NJCAA D-II history to be on the first-team in back-to-back years. He also was selected the NJCAA D-II and 2009 State Farm Coaches' NJCAA Player of the Year. Both will also participated in the NJCAA All-Star Game last weekend in Odessa, Texas.

In his 18th season, Jeffers team finished with a 26-9 record while he guided the Cavaliers to the NJCAA Division II championship with a 63-49 victory over Kirkwood (Iowa) Community College in the final game. This was the second NJCAA title for Jeffers, having taken the championship in 2000-01 as the Cavaliers finished with a school record mark of 30-6.

Ricks averaged 17.2 points, 5.2 rebounds and 5.8 assists in 2008-09. He also ranked among the top 50 players in the country in scoring average, assists per game and steals per game. Ricks averaged 16.3 points in the national tournament to garner MVP honors.
