Colby To Name Dustin Pfeifer As New Head Men's Basketball Coach

Colby Community College President, Dr. Lynn Kreider, announced Wednesday morning the selection of Dustin Pfeifer as the new head men's basketball coach. The move will be finalized at the next board meeting, pending CCC Board of Trustees approval. Pfeifer, a Colby native, was previously an assistant coach at Missouri State University - West Plains in 2008-09. Pfeifer also served as an assistant at Northwestern Oklahoma University and Fort Hays State University. The selection committee headed by Athletic Director Ryan Sturdy felt that Pfeifer was the best choice for the position.

"Many factors led to the hiring of Dustin," Sturdy said. "He has extensive experience as an assistant at successful programs, has a passion and enthusiasm to be the head coach at Colby, and has the leadership and integrity qualities essential for the job. These and many other factors led to the hiring of Dustin."

Pfeifer graduated in 2002 from Colby Community College with an Associate of Arts Degree, and then received both his bachelor's degree (2005) and master's degree (2007) in health and human performance from Fort Hays State. Pfeifer was a star athlete for Colby High School, playing an integral part on the 1999 State Championship Team. After playing one season of basketball at Northeastern Junior College in 2000-01, he returned to Colby to play baseball under Ryan Carter in 2002. Pfeifer returned to NJC in the fall of 2002 to play basketball once again.

His coaching career began at NCAA Division II school Fort Hays State as a student assistant under Mark Johnson. In 2005 Pfeifer was promoted to an assistant coach at FHSU, and was at the school until 2007. Pfeifer was at NAIA school Northwestern Oklahoma State for one season, before joining former Colby College alum Yancey Walker to be an assistant at West Plains. Pfeifer takes over the program from John Woods, who compiled a 32-89 record in four seasons.
