W. Track-JCCC captures first Region VI Triple Crown

OVERLAND PARK, KS – Johnson County Community College sophomore Ashley Reid technically can lay claim as the Region VI Female Track Athlete of the Year, and head coach Mike Bloemker the women’s Coach of the Year.  While no official awards exist, Reid has been named the Female Athlete of the Meet at both the indoor and outdoor championships, and Bloemker has won Coach of the Meet both times.

At last weekend’s outdoor championships in Hutchinson, Kan., Reid won the high jump and triple jump, placed runner-up in the long jump and ran a leg on the 4x100 relay that place third. She was the East Jayhawk Conference champion in all three of her individual events, and set new conference meet records in the triple jump (38-11.5) and long jump (19-2). In her two seasons, Reid is a four-time region champion and nine-time conference champion.

Reid’s effort, along with her teammates, helped the Lady Cavaliers win both the region and conference team championships, completing a region and conference triple crown for Johnson County. Earlier this season, the Lady Cavaliers won region and conference titles in cross country and indoor track. This is the first region triple crown for the program, and fifth conference triple crown, but the first since 2000.

In all, JCCC won five events, and earned 15 All-Region VI honors.

Thrower Vanessa Levy also had strong performances. She was the region and conference champion in the discus, and her mark of 149-8 established a new conference meet record. She also placed second in the region and first in the conference in the javelin and fourth and first respectively in the shot put.

JCCC also produced region and conference champions in the 800-meters and the 4x800 relay. Justine Podvin was the 800-meter champion with a time of 2:20.93. Liliana Lira, Michelle Smith, Kayla Peterson and Halie McCombs comprised the 4x800 relay.

Lira also placed second in the 10,000-meters and Peterson placed second in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a school record time of 12:13.67. Kylee Eklund won the conference and place second in the pole vault clearing 11.3.75. She also ran on the 4x100 relay with Reid.
