CCCC baseball coach to be inducted into Wichita Sports Hall of Fame

(CONCORDIA, KS) - Cloud County Community College's head baseball coach, Greg Brummett is one of ten individuals that will be inducted into the Wichita Sports Hall of Fame on June 20.

The induction ceremony will take place at 2 p.m. at the Hillside Christian Church, 8330 E. Douglas, Wichita. A reception will be held earlier that day from 11 a.m. - noon at the Wichita Sports Hall of Fame, 4700 E. Central, Wichita.

Brummett, a right-handed pitcher and graduate of Wichita Northwest High, led the Wichita State Shockers to their first national championship in 1989. His complete-game 5-3 victory over Texas in the title contest capped a remarkable senior season in which he posted a nation-leading 18 victories and was named second-team All-American.

It is because of this outstanding contribution of bringing honor to the city of Wichita through sports that Brummett was selected as a member of the 2009 induction class.

"I am very honored and proud to be inducted to the Wichita Sports Hall of Fame. It makes being inducted more special to me since I was born and raised in Wichita," said Brummett. "I want to thank all of the fans who voted for me and for their support over the years."

Brummett was drafted by the San Francisco Giants in 1989 and made his major league debut in 1993. He had 13 appearances in the major leagues, going 4-4 in 72 innings. In his eight years as a professional player, he earned numerous honors.

In 1993, with the San Francisco Giants, Brummett was voted top rookie in spring training and given the Harry Jordan Award. In 1996, he was voted to the College World Series All-Decade Team of the 1980s, and in 2005, was voted the 23rd best player in College World Series History.

After his playing days, he became a head baseball coach and was inducted into the Shocker Hall of Fame in 1995 with a career record of 43-11, in 424 innings, with 364 strikeouts and 21 complete games with over 59 starts.

Brummett just completed his fifth season as the head baseball coach at Cloud County Community College and has been an asset to the college and the baseball program.

"First and foremost, Greg is a family man with a strong faith and a great deal of integrity," CCCC Athletic Director Matt Bechard said. "Greg's reputation is growing within the state and the Midwest as a coach that runs a quality program, one that develops Kansas talent as well as brings big league experience to the table."

Prior to arriving at Cloud, Brummett coached for one year at the Air Force Academy. Before that, he spent four years as the pitching coach at the University of North Carolina-Charlotte. During that time, he coached six players who went on to play professional baseball. In his five seasons at Cloud, he has coached numerous players that have gone on to play Division I and Division II baseball.

Three of his former CCCC Thunderbirds have been drafted by the major leagues. Those players include: Jared Goedert, Cleveland Indians, Spring 2003; Jacob Diekman, Philadelphia Phillies, Spring 2007; and Shawn Joy, New York Yankees, Spring 2007.

Brummett and his wife Donna live in Concordia with their children Garrett and Brynn.
