Cougar Men Capture Region VI Tennis
Title
From start to finish it was a weekend of high emotions for the Barton
County Community College tennis team at the Region VI Meet in Wichita.
By the time the weekend had come to an end, Barton County was sitting
above every other team in the conference - crowned Region VI Champions.
The Cougars, expected to finish as low as 4th, won the meet with 19.5
points, followed by Cowley County with 17.5. Independence was 3rd with
15.5 points while Johnson County
(13) and Seward County (5) rounded out the team scoring in a region that
had 5 teams ranked in the Top 10. The top 3 teams advance to the NJCAA
National Tournament
Highlights
The weekend started off with a difficult situation for the Coach Mark
Lewis and the Cougars. When the coaches were seeding the brackets, the
other coaches in the conference forced Coach Lewis to change his lineup.
Coach Lewis had Great Bend High graduate Sam Wrinkle playing the No. 4
singles with Gui Cury playing No. 5 and Guiherme Jasmin playing No. 6.
Wrinkle was forced to drop to No. 6 while Cury and Jasmin each moved up
one spot. With that came low seeds in their respective draws since those
individuals had not played against other foes in their draw.
All that did was provide a little fire
under the Cougars - especially Wrinkle - who delivered the final bit of
justice. Wrinkle simply went on the court, rolled into the finals of the
No. 6 singles, where he placed 2nd. In the process he knocked off the
No. 2 from Johnson County in the semifinals, 7-5, 7-6 to advance to the
title match. Then in No. 3 doubles, Wrinkle and Jasmin promptly rolled
to the title with the final match of the day - a 6-2, 6-3 win over
Johnson County's Collin Torrence and Trevor Welch - securing the Region
VI title for the Cougars. Jasmin and Cury also extracted a measure of
revenge, with Cury winning No. 4 and Jasmin taking 3rd in No. 5.
Barton took 2nd place in the No. 1 and
No. 3 singles while taking 3rd in No. 2. Simon Thornewill took 2nd in
No. 1 singles, falling to Donik Arabyan of Indy in the finals. Loic
Hereson was runner-up in No. 3, falling to Jeff Stone of Cowley in the
finals. At No. 2 singles, Barton's Kruno Despotovski lost in the
semifinals to Kyle Markham of Johnson County but won the 3rd place match
over Tin Hinst of Cowley.
In doubles, Barton took a pair of 3rds
in No. 1 and No. 2 in addition to the title at No. 3 by Wrinkle and
Jasmin that secured the championship. Thornewill and Despotovski lost in
the semis at No. 1 doubles to eventual champion Indy before knocking off
Cowley for 3rd. In No. 2 Cury and Hereson also fell in the semi to Indy
before rebounding for 3rd.
