STEVE LAMPE HONORED BY
NATIONAL WRESTLING HALL OF FAME

Steve Lampe, one of the most respected and
successful college wrestling coaches in the nation, has added one more
honor to a long list of accomplishments. Lampe, in his 28th year as head
coach of the Colby Community College Trojans, was recently selected to
receive the Lifetime Service to Wrestling Award from the National
Wrestling Hall of Fame. The award is given in recognition of years of
dedication to the development of leadership and citizenship in young
people through the sport of wrestling. The National Wrestling Hall of
the Fame and the Kansas State Chapter will honor Lampe on Sunday, Nov.
9, during a presentation at the City Limits Convention Center in Colby.
In addition, his name will be permanently displayed in the National
Museum located in Stillwater, Okla. During his almost three decade
career at CCC, Lampe has posted over 240 dual wins. He has coached four
teams to regional championships, 14 individual national champions and 71
NJCAA All-Americans. Thirteen times his teams have placed in the top 10
at the National Tournament, including the 1999 first place finish and a
second place finish in 2002.
"Steve Lampe has been a positive
role model for hundreds of young athletes," said CCC President Dr.
Mikel Ary. "His dedication to the sport and support of academic
endeavors by his athletes is exceptional. This award is a fitting
tribute to his success as a coach and educator."
The Colby native was inducted into the
NJCAA Wrestling Coaches Hall of Fame in 1984 and was honored again for
his contribution to the sport in 1990. He has been named the
West-Central Zone Coach of the Year seven times, NJCAA National Coach of
the Year in 1993 and 1999, and in 1998 was selected NJCAA Man of the
Year in wrestling. Lampe was selected in 1997 to receive the 25-year
Service Award from the National Wrestling Coaches Association in
recognition of his remarkable success as a college wrestling coach and
efforts in furthering the sport. He was awarded the 1998-99 National
Wrestling Coaches Association Excellence Award, honoring his outstanding
season and coaching expertise. In addition, he was inducted into the
Kansas Coaches Hall of Fame in 1999 In addition to his coaching duties,
Lampe teaches speech and public speaking at CCC. In recognition of his
teaching expertise, he was honored with the Dr. James Tangeman
Distinguished Teacher Award in 1999.
