2017 KJCCC D2 Softball Players of the Week, Week 9

Highland Community College freshman Julisa Ortega dominated on the mound while helping the Lady Scotties to three wins. Ortega allowed just one run in six innings during a 9-1 win over Hutchinson. She then pitched a scoreless inning of relief in a lopsided win over Hesston before tossing a two-hit shutout in a 1-0 win over Hesston. Ortega struck out 10 and did not walk a batter in the complete game shutout. Ortega finished the week allowing only six hits and one walk in 14 innings, while striking out 16 and earning a pair of victories.

Johnson County freshman Sammi Bates hit .857 (6-for-7) with two doubles, a triple, six runs scored and four driven in in a double header sweep over Fort Scott last week. In the first game, Bates was 3-for-4 with a double, two runs scored and an RBI. She followed going 3-for-3 with a double and triple, four runs scored and three RBI. Bates is batting .566 on the season, fourth-best in the NJCAA.
