2016-17 KJCCC Women's Basketball Players of the Week, Week 12
Alexus Johnson helped the DC Conqs break their recent losing streak by scoring 20 of her game-high 35 points in the first half of a 71-68 road win at Colby Community College. The sophomore would follow that up with 20 points against Garden City which included an 8-8 performance from the charity stripe as the Conqs rallied back from 24 down to nearly beat the Lady Broncbusters. During the game against Garden City, Johnson broke into the top-10 all-time career scoring charts at DC3 and now sits in 10th place with 715 career points. This season, Johnson is averaging 18.8 points per game which is third-best in the KJCCC and 22nd among scorers in the NJCAA.
In a crucial Jayhawk (Division II) Conference game Jameka Dowell had a career high 35 points to lead Highland to a 104-67 win over #12 ranked and Conference (Division II) leading Labette Community College. Dowell had the dubious task of guarding the #2 scorer in the conference Tyra Jones (17.7ppg) holding her to 11 points (3-12) on the night. She also had 6 steals in that game as well as 4 rebounds and 2 assists. In the first game of the week, Dowell also led the Scotties in a tough road win over Fort Scott scoring 18 points with 3 steals and 2 assists. For the week Dowell averaged 26.5 ppg as well as 4.5 spg. The Labette game also moved her into the #9 spot on the Highland career scoring list.
