Region VI champions Hutchinson claim Freshman of the Year, Coach of the Year, Co-Newcomer of the Year and Co-Player of the Year in this years awards along with three All-Conference selections.
Coach of the Year: John Ontjes, Hutchinson
Coach John Ontjes, head coach of the 2022 Region VI Champions the Hutchinson Blue Dragons, claims his 8th KJCCC Coach of the Year Award after leading his team to another NJCAA National Tournament appearance. The Blue Dragons finished the regular KJCCC season with a record of 19-5, tying the independence Pirates for the KJCCC Division I title, Ontjes 9th at Hutchinson.
Co-Player of the Year: Mya Williams, Hutchinson and Maisa Marcal, Independence
Williams was the player that made the Blue Dragons tick offensively this season. Leading the entire KJCCC Div. I side in scoring, Williams averaged 18.8 points per game on 43% shooting from the floor and 38% from deep. Seven times, Williams made 4+ three-pointers in a game this season. Williams led the Blue Dragons to a Region VI title with her 27 and 21 point performances in the semifinals and finals of the Region VI tournament.
Marcal helped lead the Pirates to a KJCCC Championship this season. She finished fourth in the KJCCC in scoring averaging 14.3 points per game. She shot 42% from the floor and 32% from deep while also averaging seven rebounds per game. Marcal finished the season with six 20+ point performances.
Freshman of the Year: Mya Williams, Hutchinson
Williams was the player that made the Blue Dragons tick offensively this season. Leading the entire KJCCC Div. Co-Newcomer of the Year: Jenny Nkem Womsi, Barton & Mele Kailahi, Hutchinson
Nkem Womsi was a dominant force for the Cougars all season long. She averaged 9.9 points per game to go along with her 8.9 rebounds per game. Shooting 55% from the floor, Nkem Womsi was as consistent as they come finishing the season with 14 double-doubles. She had a season high 24 rebounds in a game against Seward on January 5th.
Kailahi averaged 11.5 points per game along with 8.3 rebounds per game. She shot 48.5% from the floor and just shy of 40% from three-point range, the best in the KJCCC this year. She had three games of 20+ points for the Blue Dragons and posted seven double-doubles on the year.
Defensive Player of the Year: Britney Mapang, Garden City
Mapang was voted as the Defensive Player of the Year by the KJCCC coaches after creating havoc for offensive players across the league all season long. Mapang was the defensive leader for a team that led the KJCCC in points allowed per game at 53.6 and held opponents to 36% shooting. Although her offensive stats don't stand out, Mapang was a vital part of Garden City's defensive scheme that caused a lot of problems for their opposition all season long.
