The 20th ranked Pratt
Beavers came to Neosho on Thursday night for a dual between two
teams ranked in the top 20 Nationally. Neosho ranked 13th in the
NJCAA poll got out to an early lead at 125 lbs when Alex Gorton had
5 takedowns before pinning his foe. Up 6-0, Stephen Kendrick was in
cruise control, his superior conditioning was too much for his
opposition who became ill midway through the bout and the referee
declared Kendrick the winner by a medical forfeit. Neosho was
anticipating an even wider margin of leading, but Montana Carson
was caught in a scramble and then subsequently pinned shortly
thereafter, making the dual 12-6, but that would be as close as it
would get for the duration of the dual in the team scores.
Over the next 3 weights, Caleb Van Lue, Justin Ringgold, and Tucker
Rutherford would all pull out a victory with Van Lue's coming vie
way of a 10-1 major decision, and Ringgold and Rutherford's by
regular decisions. Ringgold's victory was especially sweet, as his
narrow 6-4 triumph over Cameron Riojas of Pratt marked the first
time in 5 tries that Ringgold has defeated Riojas, Tucker
Rutherford weighing in for the 157 weight, bumped up and pulled off
a huge win as well with a late takedown over Pratt's Travis Budke
in winning a 5-4 matchup. At 174 Pratt fired back with another fall
to again narrow the gap, however, Neosho now up only 22-12, could
put the dual out of reach with 1 more win in one of the 3 last
matches of the night. Thankfully, for the Panthers they didn't have
to wait long for that win, in more ways than one, as Derek Heckel
went out at 184 and dispatched of his opponent in a mere 45
seconds.
Although Neosho had the dual locked up there was still two weight
classes to be wrestled, at 197 the two wrestlers each had an escape
which would have tied it up 1-1, however it was the lack of offense
resulting in 5 combined stalling calls between the two wrestlers
that would prove to be the difference, as the Pratt wrestler was
called one less time, thus giving him the 1pt edge to squeak out
the victory. Finally at 285 the big boys took to the mat with
Neosho's Kris Powell losing by fall.
The Panthers improve to 4-2 on the young year and will be at the
Central Missouri Open on Sunday, then will be on the road against
4th ranked Labette in a conference showdown on Wednesday.
