KJCCC Women's Soccer Athletes of the Week, Wk. 7
One of the nation’s top five attackers, Rayssa Neres contributed eleven points this past week helping Barton to a pair of Jayhawk Conference wins including a big victory to help put the Cougars in the driver’s seat for a conference crown at 9-0-1 and 10-2-1 overall. Against Hutchinson last Wednesday, Neres had a foot in all four of Barton’s goals, scoring the first three to record the first hat trick by opponent against Hutchinson since 2012. As Barton was trying to hold off the Blue Dragons in the last ten minutes, Neres delivered the key assist to secure the Cougars’ first victory over the Hutchinson since 2013 and the first on the Cougars’ home turf since 2005. Neres’ week concluded on Friday with two goals and two assists to move into a tie for the program’s second best goal season and third most points in a season. Now with 31 goals and 75 points, the freshman from Brazil ranks fourth nationally in both categories.
Freshman goalkeeper Haven Johannsen helped Pratt split competition this week with a total of 24 saves. Johannsen only allowed a single goal in 90 minutes of play against Garden City Community College while facing 12 shots on goal from the opposition. She kept her team in the game with 11 saves and was only bested by a ball floated in the heavy wind. Johannsen continued her theme of double-digit saves by rejecting 13 of 16 shots against Cloud County Community College, who is currently receiving votes. She also contributed on the offensive end by earning a rare assist on her team’s only score in the game from a goal kick.
