Welcome to My World

My name is Russ Karn, known to a few online as "Kanc6" but to most I'm just "Russ".  I'm not "Mr. Karn", he still lives in the house on the hill.  This web page is an opportunity to give back to those who gave to me & to those who someday may give of themselves to help others.  I attended Highland Community College in 1971 as an average student-athlete.  Participating in football and track, I learned very quickly at 5' 9" 175 lbs and slower than most, you must "Improvise, Adapt & Overcome" not only to survive but succeed.  Upon the end of my playing career, and at the ripe old age of 24,  I was faced with a life-long challenge.  The loss of the use of my arms & legs forced me to do as I had done throughout my athletic years. "Improvise, Adapt & Overcome"  I witnessed an outpouring of support after my injury that I will never forget.  People who had never met me, gave what they could to help get me back into the mainstream of life.  Shortly after my rehab, I was presented with an opportunity to announce football games and track meets at Highland High School & Highland Community College, for which I have done since 1978.

This opportunity gave me a purpose to redevelop my skills physically & mentally.  For that, I am eternally grateful.

Since the fall of 1978, I have been honored many times for doing what just comes naturally to me, giving of my time.  I coached summer league baseball for 12 years.  In 1994, with the help of Information Systems Coordinator, Pam Ninemire, I was given the opportunity to create and maintain the Scottie Athletic web page until 2006.  I was given the opportunity to serve the patrons of Doniphan County, Kansas by being elected to the Highland Community College Board of Trustees in 1995 and apparently still have earned their trust to this day.  I was honored as the "Voice Of The Scotties" in 1998 as well as presented with a plaque for service to Highland Jr/Sr High School.  I was selected to the Highland Community College Athletic Hall of Fame in 1999.  It was a great honor to be placed with those who gave much more of themselves than I have.  I am still awed to be among them.  In 1998, my wife & I provided an opportunity along with members of the Scottie Booster Club to create a softball park for the Lady Scottie Softball program and area youth.  I am currently the webmaster of the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference website in order to promote the student-athletes of NJCAA Region VI.  I have been honored many times by the Delaware Valley League.

If you think back, there was someone behind the scene who gave of their time to make your world a better experience.  When you have the chance, give of yourself to provide another with the same opportunity.  Russ Karn
