EL DORADO - Sophomore defensive back Mike West provided
the late heroics and Butler continued
its domination of Coffeyville while winning the Region VI
championship football game Sunday.
West returned a kickoff 43 yards with 1:58
left in the contest and Butler defeated Coffeyville, 37-26,
to claim its fourth successive title, its third in a row
against the Red Ravens; the Grizzlies have beaten
Coffeyville in 11 consecutive games over seven seasons.
Butler (11-0), which has won 23 consecutive
games over two years, won the national championship
while rolling up a 12-0 record last season and is now on the
brink of repeating that feat.
In this Butler-Coffeyville game, it was a
battle of the quarterbacks, Butler's Zac Taylor
finishing the game with 21-of-31 completions for 277 yards.
He threw his only touchdown pass to Ryan Torain, a 21-yard
toss that gave the Grizzlies a, 21-6, lead in the third
quarter.
Coffeyville (9-2) quarterback Mike Machen
completed 22-of-40 passes for 264 yards, throwing a pair of
scoring passes and running in another six points on a 4-yard
run that closed out the scoring in the second quarter with
Butler on top, 14-6.
Butler and Coffeyville now both await bowl
bids.
